UNTITLED (RED OVER BROWN)

A red square hovers over a brown and blue rectangle on a grey backdrop. Rothko loved music and considered it was similar to his art. Like music, he wanted his work to envelope the viewer in emotions and an experience that created a feeling of limitless space. Even though this painting is small, viewers are meant to sit and contemplate the painting in meditation, similarly to how one enjoys a concert. The colors emulate sound and take the viewer a new place.
