NO. 5 (UNTITLED)

In 1949 Rothko had just debuted his signature style. This painting exemplifies that style with horizontal colored forms going down a large vertical painting. No. 5 (Untitled) is unusual for this time period, because of the somber colors. During the later 1940s and early 1950s Rothko usually painted with brighter colors.
